There are a fair number of projects that deal with backing up mysql databases from: zmanda, automysqlbackup.sh, phpmyadmin and mysqldump (and a whole lot more). With regard to backup (and also cron), we currently feel that the other open source options offer a lot more than building and maintaining it in-house. Hence the recommendation to use something outside of civicrm.

There’s been a lot of talk in the community of CiviCRM integrating with wordpress. I’ve already seen signs of plugin functionality.

I’m surprised that the developer answer was to tell people to use phpMyAdmin to dump data as a backup. It’s not a very slick solution and some people aren’t all that familiar with phpMyAdmin.
