‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’ was issued as a single on 26 February 2013, the second song released ahead of The Next Day. Its video was directed by Floria Sigismondi, and starred Bowie and Tilda Swinton.
The title track ‘The Next Day’ was the third single taken from the album. The video, again directed by Sigismondi, caused controversy for its depiction of a Christ-like Bowie, Gary Oldman in the role of a bishop, and Marion Cotillard as a sexually-charged figure. The video was initially banned on YouTube, although it was subsequently reinstated with an age restriction.
‘Valentine’s Day’ was the fourth single released from The Next Day, on 19 August 2013 in the UK and 20 August elsewhere. This was the last 7″ single released from a new Bowie album in his lifetime, and was accompanied by a video directed by Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri and Markus Klinko.
The fifth and final single was an edit of ‘Love Is Lost’ (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA), released to promote The Next Day Extra. It was issued as a digital download and on 12″ white vinyl, with ‘I’d Rather Be High’ (Venetian Mix) on the b-side.
