The 22 January 1972 issue of the Melody Maker carried a groundbreaking interview with David Bowie, in which the singer admitted he was “gay, and always have been.” The interview was conducted by reporter Michael Watts, and also introduced the Ziggy Stardust persona to the UK public. David’s present image is to come on like a swishy queen, a gorgeously effeminate boy. David Bowie was interviewed for Creem magazine on Tuesday 2 February 1971. The interviewer was Dave Marsh, and the exchange took place at Bowie’s hotel, a Holiday Inn on Grand Boulevard, Detroit. As they spoke Charlie Auringer took photographs for the magazine. Bowie was in the city as part of his month-long promotional tour of the USA, which began on 23 January and ended on 18 February.

Interview: Record Mirror

David Bowie gave an interview to Record Mirror on 24 September 1969. The press interest was due to the chart success of ‘Space Oddity’. On this day he also took part in a photoshoot at the London home of his manager Kenneth Pitt, and in the evening attended a meeting to discuss the direction of Growth – the Beckenham Arts Lab.

Two days before the release of his second single ‘I Pity The Fool’, David Bowie – then Davie Jones – gave an interview to the Daily Mirror newspaper on 3 March 1965. The controversy was that the Manish Boys’ forthcoming appearance on the BBC’s Gadzooks! It’s All Happening was under threat due to the length of his hair.
