The event took place at Lewisham Town Hall on Catford Road in Catford, London. By this point Bowie had grown frustrated with The Konrads and was looking for a new band to join. His final show with the group was on 31 December 1963.

Bowie painted the cartoon-like illustrations on the panels which were used as the stage backdrop for The Konrads.

The recording was an audition for the Rolling Stones’ manager Eric Easton and his assistant Bob Knight, who were interested in taking on The Konrads. The two men met the group several weeks previously after a show at Orpington Civic Hall. Easton was interested in whether Decca saw potential in the group, hence the recording session.
