A fortnight later, on 5 May 1965, the band’s keyboard player Bob Solly and saxophonist Paul Rodriguez visited producer Shel Talmy’s office on Dean Street in London’s Soho. Davie Jones and the Manish Boys performed at the Trent Bridge Rowing Club in Nottingham, England, on Sunday 11 April 1965. It was their first live booking in three weeks. Exasperated with the lack of gigs and money, and frustrated by continual problems with the band’s van, baritone sax player Woolf Byrne quit the Manish Boys after this show. David Bowie performed with the Buzz at the Rowing Club on 5 March and 31 July 1966.

Davie Jones and the Manish Boys performed at the Olympia Ballroom in Cromer, Norfolk, on Sunday 14 March 1965. Their show the previous evening in Coleford, Somerset, had been cancelled without the band’s knowledge. Despite attempts to sleep at the venue, they hit the road again but ran out of diesel, forcing them to sleep in the van in the cold until the morning. After finally arriving in Cromer, they shared a bill with Dundee band the Hudson Hi Four, also known as the Johnny Hudson Hi Four. The Olympia Ballroom was demolished in 1985.

David Bowie’s second single, ‘I Pity The Fool’, was released in the UK on Friday 5 March 1965. It was recorded on 15 January, along with its b-side, ‘Take My Tip’. Credited to The Manish Boys, the single was released as Parlophone R 5250. ‘I Pity The Fool’ was first recorded in 1961 by American blues singer Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland.
