David Bowie’s song ★ (‘Blackstar’) was released as a digital download on 19 November 2015, the same day that the video was released on David Bowie’s YouTube and Vevo channels. The song had originally been more than 11 minutes long, but was edited to 9:57 after Bowie and Tony Visconti learned that iTunes would not allow tracks for individual sale that lasted longer than 10 minutes. David Bowie filmed a television commercial for the David Live album on 16 October 1974. The shoot took place at the Channel 9 (CKLW-TV) studios at 825 Riverside Drive West in Windsor in Ontario, Canada. It cost MainMan $5,000. David Live was released on 29 October 1974.

On 13 June 1973, prior to a concert at the Gaumont State Theatre on London’s Kilburn High Road, Mick Rock directed David Bowie in a promotional film for ‘Life On Mars?’ The shoot took place in Blandford West a studio in Ladbroke Grove. Bowie wore an ice-blue suit designed by Freddie Burretti, with make-up by Pierre Laroche. I always knew when Pierre Laroche was having a bad day, as he would give me green eye shadow, which he knew I hated. David and Angela Bowie attended the premiere of the film Hitler: The Last Ten Days on 7 May 1973. The film starred Alec Guinness and Simon Ward, and was directed by Ennio De Concini. The premiere was held at the Empire Cinema on London’s Leicester Square, with Princess Margaret the guest of honour.

On 13 December, just hours before boarding the RHMS Ellinis to England, David Bowie was in RCA’s Studio 3 in New York City, where Mick Rock directed a promotional film for ‘Space Oddity’. Mick Rock directed a promo film for David Bowie’s ‘John, I’m Only Dancing’ single on 25 August 1972. The promo was shot at London’s Rainbow Theatre, where Bowie and the Spiders From Mars performed on 19, 20, and 30 August. When the TV series Bewitched went into colour in the late 1960s, for some strange reason Samantha occasionally wore tiny tattoos on her face. I thought it looked really odd, but inspired. On 28 November 1969 David Bowie auditioned for a part in John Schlesinger’s 1971 film Sunday Bloody Sunday. Bowie had met producer Marion Brinkman the previous day to discuss the role of Bob Elkin, a young sculptor at the centre of a love triangle with a gay Jewish doctor (played by Peter Finch) and a divorced recruitment consultant (Glenda Jackson). The 28-minute promotional film was intended to showcase Bowie’s talents, and included his Feathers bandmates Hermione Farthingale and John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson.
