The shoot, for People magazine, took place at film director George Cukor’s Bel Air home, at 9166 Cordell Drive just above the Sunset Strip. David was two and a half hours late for his first meeting with Liz. He arrived dishevelled and out of it. Liz was pretty annoyed and on the verge of leaving, but we managed to persuade her to stay. She was thinking of asking him to appear in The Blue Bird, but she went off the idea after that. Terry O’Neill,

Bowie began working up ideas for the Young Americans album cover shortly after the first recording sessions at Sigma Sound Studios concluded on 22 August. He had originally requested a painting from the American artist and writer Norman Rockwell, but Rockwell’s work pace and Bowie’s restlessness proved incompatible. I really wanted Norman Rockwell to do an album cover for me. Still do. I originally wanted him for the cover of Young Americans. I got his phone number and called him up. Very quaint.

Although not ultimately used on the album, O’Neill’s shots were used as promotional material around the release. They featured Bowie, wearing a Spanish Cordoba hat and high-heeled boots, accompanied by a large and imposing Great Dane dog. Bowie walked into the studio with this giant, beautiful dog. He sat in a chair, all stretched out, with the dog standing next to him. But every time we took a photo, the dog would bark at the strobe light. The dog got so excited by

It featured David Bowie and the English model Twiggy. The shoot was not originally intended for the album, but was for fashion magazine Vogue. Born Lesley Hornby in September 1949, Twiggy was a leading model during the Swinging Sixties. Bowie had namechecked her in the chorus of Aladdin Sane’s ‘Drive-In Saturday’. He’d done a song called ‘Drive-In Saturday’, and there was a line where he said, ‘She sighed like Twig the Wonder Kid.’ I heard it on the radio and went,

The photographer was Brian Duffy, who also took the cover shots for Bowie’s later albums Lodger and Scary Monsters… And Super Creeps. The Aladdin Sane shoot was at Duffy’s studio at 151a King Henry’s Road in Swiss Cottage, north London. I was fortunate to work for Duffy from 71-74, first as assistant then as studio manager. I was there that Sunday when the Aladdin Sane pic was taken and well remember Duffy drawing the outline of the flash

The photographer was Johnnie Clamp, for gay magazine Jeremy. A reporter from the publication had watched Bowie’s performance at London’s Speakeasy the night before. The car breaks down. It’s raining and we arrive late to take the photos. The house is a stunning and monstrous folly of a place in deepest Beckenham. Light on. Door open. No sign of David. He’s just popped down to the shops for paraffin and meat for the night’s stew. David takes us on a conducted tour of his mansion
