David Bowie’s sixth album, Aladdin Sane, was released in the United States of America on 20 April 1973. Although commonly believed to have been released on 13 April 1973, Bowie’s official site stated in 2018 that the official date was actually 20 April – although in the UK it was brought forward by a day due to the Easter holiday. Previously thought to have been issued on 13th April, 1973, new evidence has come to light that proves the release date was officially the 20th, but being Good Friday in the UK the album was ‘made available’ on the 19th. davidbowie.com

David Bowie and the Spiders From Mars finished recording Aladdin Sane on 24 January 1973. The final sessions took place at London’s Trident Studios from 20-24 January, after which Bowie set sail for America to continue the Ziggy Stardust Tour. The last session involved Bowie adding vocals to ‘Aladdin Sane’, plus overdubs for ‘Panic In Detroit’.

The photo shoot for the cover of David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane is likely to have taken place on Sunday 21 January 1973. The photographer was Brian Duffy, who also took the cover shots for Bowie’s later albums Lodger and Scary Monsters… And Super Creeps. The Aladdin Sane shoot was at Duffy’s studio at 151a King Henry’s Road in Swiss Cottage, north London. I was fortunate to work for Duffy from 71-74, first as assistant then as studio manager. I was there that Sunday when the Aladdin Sane pic was taken and well remember Duffy drawing the outline of the flash

David Bowie’s final New York recording session for Aladdin Sane took place on 11 December 1972. It was the culmination of a week’s recording at RCA Studios in New York City, with Ken Scott producing. Since the tour was extended and David and the band wouldn’t be back in the UK for some time, it was decided that I should come over to the States to begin recording their next album. We started recording tracks, some of which would eventually become part of Aladdin Sane, in New York City at RCA Studios, such as a version of ‘All The Young
