Bowie and the Spiders From Mars recorded ‘Five Years’, ‘It’s Gonna Rain Again’, and ‘Shadow Man’. ‘Five Years’ became the opening track on the album. The other two songs remained unreleased, although Bowie re-recorded ‘Shadow Man’ years later for the Toy album.

Bowie and the Spiders From Mars recorded two takes of ‘Moonage Daydream’, one of ‘Soul Love’, two of ‘The Supermen’, and two of ‘Lady Stardust’. The basics took about four or five days and were virtually the same for every track. It was only the nuances in each song that would vary. What’s more, nothing was recorded 100% live. There were overdubs on every track, and as is usually the case,

This was the third recording session for the album. Bowie decided to scrap the recordings made on 8 and 10 November. I really enjoyed doing that album, but I remember it being a nightmare because Bowie would come in and just throw songs at us. We were used to it, but the unfortunate thing wasn’t, ‘Here’s a song. Let’s rehearse it for an hour.’ It was, ‘Here’s a song. You got it? Let’s go.’ You had one or

After this session, however, Bowie decided the results were sub-standard, and elected to re-record the songs laid down thus far. It is not known which songs were worked on during this session.

It occurred before the Hunky Dory album was released, such was Bowie’s urgency and prolificacy at this time. Having waited years for commercial and critical success, he knew he was on the cusp of a breakthrough. Bowie and his band underwent a fortnight of rehearsals at Underhill Studio in Blackheath, prior to beginning work at Trident Studios in central London. Despite laying the groundwork before entering the studios, his musicians still often felt underprepared. I really enjoyed

Although this was a Hunky Dory session, neither song was included on the eventual release. ‘It Ain’t Easy’ was held back for the following year’s The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, and ‘Bombers’ remained unreleased until January 1990, when it was a bonus track on the Rykodisc reissue of Hunky Dory. I certainly haven’t destroyed any of those tracks. I’ve kept them all. I think that maybe that we could put them out as a budget album or something
