David Bowie’s ninth studio album, Young Americans, was released on 7 March 1975. Critical reactions to Young Americans were broadly positive, although some were unconvinced by Bowie’s new soulful direction. The album peaked at number two in the United Kingdom, and number nine in America. It reached the top ten in Australia, New Zealand and Sweden, but fared less well in other countries. David Bowie’s ‘Young Americans’ single was released in the United Kingdom on 21 February 1975, four days after its US release. The album Young Americans followed on 7 March. The single, RCA 2523, peaked at number 18 in the UK. The b-side was a live recording of ‘Suffragette City’ from the David Live album. In the US it became Bowie’s biggest hit to date, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, and 20 on the Cash Box chart. His previous highest-charting single had been ‘Rebel Rebel’, which went no higher than number 64.

The photo shoot for David Bowie’s ninth studio album, Young Americans, took place on 30 August 1974. Bowie began working up ideas for the Young Americans album cover shortly after the first recording sessions at Sigma Sound Studios concluded on 22 August. He had originally requested a painting from the American artist and writer Norman Rockwell, but Rockwell’s work pace and Bowie’s restlessness proved incompatible. I really wanted Norman Rockwell to do an album cover for me. Still do. I originally wanted him for the cover of Young Americans. I got his phone number and called him up. Very quaint.
