That is paramount. It has nothing to do with whether it is off the shelf or how well it integrates with Facebook. Simply put, you can’t use application and database interchangeably. There is not one AMS vendor in the database business. They are in the application business. I chuckle when I receive solicitation calls from AMS sales people saying “The true power of our solution is one unified database”. So your aplication will replace Microsoft Sequel or Oracle 11g ? Really!!!

It doesn’t matter to the average user whether MSCRM is a database or an application. The article may have used the two terms interchangeably, but I think the overall points are still valid.

Microsoft consdeers Microsoft CRM as an application and SQl as a database. Similarly, Oracle considers People Soft & Siebel as an application and Oracle 11g as a database. Point being, you still need to have a database even when you have an AMS.
