Recording: Space Oddity

The first version of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ was recorded on 2 February 1969.

It was for Love You Till Tuesday, Bowie’s promotional film which was shot in January and February 1969. ‘Space Oddity’ was the only song written for the film, although it also contained versions of older songs with new vocals.

The recording took place at Morgan Studios at 169-171 High Street, Willesden Green, London. It was produced by Jonathan Weston.

Bowie and John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson played guitar and sang. The other musicians were Colin Wood (Hammond organ, Mellotron), Dave Clague (bass guitar), and Tat Meager (drums).

The Love You Till Tuesday sequence for ‘Space Oddity’ was shot at London’s Clarence Studios on 6 February 1969.
