David Bowie – then David Jones – spent his first day at infant school on 12 November 1951.
He joined Stockwell Infant School six weeks before his fifth birthday.
The young David suffered from first day nerves, and later spoke of accidentally urinating on the floor but being too embarrassed to tell his teacher.
Despite the initial setback, however, he soon acclimatised to the new regime and on the way home informed his mother that he would walk to school and back unaccompanied in future.
David did not remain at the school for long. In 1953 the Jones family moved to 106 Canon Road in Bromley, and the following year to 23 Clarence Road. His parents placed him in a small private school, before he joined Raglan Infants School, a council-run school a short distance from Clarence Road. He remained at Raglan until 1955.
