David Bowie’s band The Konrads recorded a session at Decca Studios in West Hampstead, London, on Thursday 29 August 1963.
The recording was an audition for the Rolling Stones’ manager Eric Easton and his assistant Bob Knight, who were interested in taking on The Konrads. The two men met the group several weeks previously after a show at Orpington Civic Hall.
Easton was interested in whether Decca saw potential in the group, hence the recording session. The Konrads recorded a song, ‘I Never Dreamed’, co-written by David Bowie and Alan Dodds, which was pressed onto an acetate disc.
‘I Never Dreamed’ is the only known studio recording of The Konrads featuring Bowie, who provided harmony vocals.
Although Decca were unimpressed by the recording, Easton remained in contact with the band, and booked them to support the Rolling Stones in 1965, long after Bowie had left.
Bowie recorded numerous times at Decca in the mid-Sixties, most notably for his debut album.
