I use a Mac and thus I use Office 2008. Office 2011 was recently released, with much fanfare, in part because Microsoft is replacing their Entourage calendar/email program with Outlook. I’m not an Outlook user, so this particular change doesn’t mean much to me.
However, I do use Entourage’s calendar function, because not only do I find the user interface more appealing than Apple’s iCal program, but Entourage has a really cool feature called “travel time.” By checking this box and entering a time amount, I can set an appointment AND add the travel time required for the appointment itself. Since I often have to travel to client’s offices, this feature is very useful to me, because it lets me set the actual time of the appointment PLUS block off the travel time required to get to the appointment. And visually it shows me the actual meeting time versus the actual out-of-office time. I find this incredibly useful.
So naturally, with the change to Outlook in Office 2011, Microsoft has eliminated this feature. As a result, I won’t be upgrading to Office 2011 until Office 2008 is no longer supported.
Yes, this one single feature is enough to make me wait, since none of the new features in Office 2011 outweigh the benefits of this one feature in Entourage.
How about you? Is there any software that you use now that you’ve refused to upgrade, because you felt like the upgrade was going to be a step back?
Windows Vista? ;)
I use Gmail, as a workaround to travel time, if I have a 10-11AM appointment with 30 mins each way of travel time, I will create an appointment from 9:30-11:30 and title the meeting “Meeting with Joe @10AM” so I know when I need to leave vs. when I’m supposed to be there for the meeting.
I agree with the argument though, sometimes that one feature that you love is enough to hearken waiting. Thanks for another great blog post!

Vista? I don’t get it. I’m a Mac user! ;-)
I like your workaround, and have considered using it. But I’m spoiled by how nicely the “travel time” functionality works.
I made the jump to the mac platform about a month ago. No looking back!
