The path to the best database

Here’s a good article in ASAE’s recent Associations Now Technology Guide supplement, including some good advice from yours truly.

About Wes Trochlil

For over 30 years, Wes has worked in and with dozens of associations and membership organizations throughout the US, ranging in size from zero staff (all-volunteer) to over 700. In that time Wes has provided a range of consulting services, from general consulting on data management issues to full-scale, association-wide selection and implementation of association management systems.

  1. Wes an AMS is an application and not a database. Microsoft consdeers Microsoft CRM as an application and SQl as a database. Similarly, Oracle considers People Soft & Siebel as an application and Oracle 11g as a database. Point being, you still need to have a database even when you have an AMS.

  2. Peter, you’re right, but I’m not sure I get your point. It doesn’t matter to the average user whether MSCRM is a database or an application. The article may have used the two terms interchangeably, but I think the overall points are still valid.

  3. Wes, a database is about keeping your data secure and hack-free. That is paramount. It has nothing to do with whether it is off the shelf or how well it integrates with Facebook. Simply put, you can’t use application and database interchangeably. There is not one AMS vendor in the database business. They are in the application business. I chuckle when I receive solicitation calls from AMS sales people saying “The true power of our solution is one unified database”. So your aplication will replace Microsoft Sequel or Oracle 11g ? Really!!!
