Here’s the thing about being “first” on anything. Only ONE company or person can be first. Only one. So when I read proposals from vendors that say things like “the first cloud-based AMS” I think “The writer is a fool or a liar.”
A similar thing is true about the word “only.” Once two companies are doing something, neither company can say “only” anymore. And the thing about technology is, once a technology has been released, it’s usually very easy to rip off. Which means “only” only lasts a little while.
Because only ONE company can be the first, and it only takes TWO companies to make “only” a false statement, my recommendation is to STOP saying and writing these things. No one believes it, and frankly, I doubt it impresses anyone anyway.
Good points, Wes. I would add “The world’s leading provider of….” to your list of bad marketing.
But,if you notice, this phrase is used all of the time.
It’s Marketing malpractice, IMHO.
