Davie Jones and The Manish Boys recorded three songs for Decca Records on Tuesday 6 October 1964.
The session was arranged following a meeting between the band and Decca Records’ A&R man Mike Smith on 25 September.
The recordings were made at Regent Sound studio at 4 Denmark Street in central London.
The band recorded three tracks, versions of Barbara Lewis’s ‘Hello Stranger’, Gene Chandler’s ‘Duke Of Earl’, and Mickey & Sylvia’s ‘Love Is Strange’. All are now believed to be lost.
The purpose of the session was for a planned single, which never came to pass. All three songs were re-recorded by the band on 12 October at the same studio.
The only single by Davie Jones and The Manish Boys was ‘I Pity The Fool’, released by Parlophone in March 1965. Decca would not release anything by David Bowie until ‘Rubber Band’ in December 1966.
